Ita Lugg, nee Wilmot, was born in Young Street, Parkside. After her father, who was the head messenger at Parliament House, died in 1914, Ita left school. She embarked on about eleven years of domestic service to support herself, and with her older sister, to help support the family. (Her father's estate, which provided the family with a very small allowance, was executed by the Public Trustees which shocked the Wilmot's before long by selling their home without notice and presenting them with a bill for the first month's rent.) Ita's first job was with a family of four in Upper Kensington. The second was with a family of seven in Payneham and involved long hours and arduous work. When her mother died in the early 1920s Ita returned to live with her siblings in Parkside and became the daily help for a neighbourhood family until her marriage to a bricklayer in 1926.
