TitleWelcome to colourDate of publication19th February 1975SourceAustralian women's weekly, 19 February 1975, pp. 24-25Description
Australia was a relatively late adopter of colour television. The first nationwide colour broadcast in the USA had occurred in 1954 and by the mid/late 1960s they, and the UK, broadcast in colour.
While colour broadcasting had begun in New Zealand in 1973, Australia waited until March 1, 1975 for 'C-Day'.
On the ABC at 11.57pm February 28, a black and white Aunty Jack tried to hold back the advancing tide of colour. However the battle was lost and by midnight colour had taken over! Programs such as Wollongong the brave, Torque, Bellbird and Countdown burst upon our screens. And no longer would we have to guess the colour of the balls Eddie Charlton was potting on Pot black.
