Claude Joseph Ballinger from Wolseley, South Australia, won the Tennyson Medal for the top secondary student in English Literature in 1912. He was a member of the 27th Battalion, and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Barambah on 31 August 1918.

His soldier's ration book was valid from 31 December 1918 to 11 January 1919. It included coupons for meat, cheese, butter, lard, tea, sugar and jam. The 'Instructions to seller' on the back cover stated that 'Each coupon in this book, other than the meat coupons, represents the civilian weekly ration for the time in force.'
