In 1924 Walling began writing a gardening column for Home journal and became a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers across Australia, including the Advertiser and the News . Her first book, Gardens in Australia , was published in 1943 and ran into several editions. In 1947 Cottage and garden in Australia appeared. Over a period of more than 50 years Edna Walling designed some 350 gardens. Her simple philosophies on gardening appeared in hundreds of journal and newspaper columns.

The mark of Edna Walling's gardens was the use of dry stone walling. Initially her work was strongly influenced by the English woman Gertrude Jekyll, but Walling increasingly turned to using native plants. She became a passionate conservationist, fighting for preservation of the Australian Bush, and concerned also about soil erosion and water conservation.
