General descriptive catalogue of seeds, plants, roses and trees and model nursery, Houghton.

From 1856 onwards, Carl Friedrich Neumann, who took the name Charles Frederick Newman, worked an orchard and nursery at the property 'Water Gully' in the Adelaide Hills. Two decades later, the property was known in the colony as the 'Model Nursery', dealing with an extensive variety of thousands of plants, and exhibiting show hothouses, glasshouses and shadehouses. Newman's developed hybrids, introducing many new ornamental and edible plants. Seeds and plants were exported and imported to numerous countries around the world, and described in the catalogues issued later in the century.

Storm damage in 1913, and drought in the following year, were significant set-backs, and the model nursery ceased business in the early 1930s.

In 1925, one of Charles' sons Fred had set up his own nursery at Tea Tree Gully, which later became known as CF Newman & Son. In the following decades, family members have continued to develop the nursery to meet the needs of the modern market with success as Newman's Nursery, a multi-award winning garden centre.
