Books for children dealing with animals and plants including exotic foreign species were readily available in the 18th and 19th centuries but the more difficult subjects of pure science and geology was less rarely the subject for children's writers. Charles Kingsley however produced a number of books on science including Madam How and Lady Why dealing with the subject of geology. In his book he endeavoured to explain how natural phenomena occur, and in this chapter deals with glaciers and how they carved out valleys in the landscape. He likens glaciers to large ploughs.
Kingsley was a clergyman and a novelist perhaps best known for his book The Water Babies which became very popular. He wrote a number of books on natural history for children including one on the seashore. He also retold Greek myths for children, in The Heroes.
Kingsley was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University in 1860 and was also Royal Chaplain to the Prince of Wales.
