In this story the narrator's ship is drawn down a whirlpool near the North Pole and travels to the South Pole through the centre of the Earth. This anonymous imaginary journey is just one of several precursors to Jules Verne's well-known Voyage au Centre de la Terre (Journey to the centre of the Earth).

The concepts of a hollow earth and of openings at the Poles were widely held hypotheses from the 17th century to the 19th century. These ideas have become incorporated into 'lost world' geographies explored by many writers over the centuries and as recently as the 1990s.

Relation d'un voyage du Pole Arctique au Pole Antarctique contains several illustrations of the exotic flora to be found in Antarctica. This copy bears on its binding the arms of Elizabeth Farnese, Queen of Spain, wife of Philip V (1683-1746).
