George Strickland Kingston was appointed as deputy surveyor general under Colonel William Light, and arrived in South Australia onboard the Cygnet in 1836. After resigning this post in late 1838 he continued to work in the colony as a surveyor, civil engineer, architect and surveyor, and later inspector of public works and, buildings.

Kingston kept records of rainfall at his home on the corner of Grote Street and West Terrace in Adelaide, beginning from January 1839 until mid-December 1879 covering a period of almost 40 years. These records were tabled in parliament and were subsequently published as a parliamentary paper.

He left South Australia in 1880 to travel to India for his health, but died at sea.
