After arriving in South Australia with his wife Mary, Christopher Rawson Penfold, a young English doctor, settled on a property at Magill in 1844. Like many doctors, Dr. Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine.
The modest stone cottage he built was called 'The Grange' after Mary's home in England. By the 1870s the Grange vineyard covered over 60 acres and included various grape varieties.
Penfolds has won many awards throughout its history including this medal the International Wine Fair held in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1966.
