Stuart's journey into the interior of Australia

The editor or publisher in his preface lauds John McDouall Stuart: 'His name is familiar to every inhabitant of Australasia and South Australia in particular. As an explorer in these regions, Stuart has no equal whether ... as regards his hardihood ... or his enthusiasm.' The preface continues with a summary of Stuart's previous expeditions and acknowledges the assistance provided to the explorer by James Chambers and William Finke who had outfitted those expeditions. It is the publisher's intention to provide a brief selection from Stuart's journal of his recent journey in which he reached the centre of Australia and beyond.

The preface concludes with a note that Stuart has set out again in another attempt to reach the north coast of Australia. This time he is again accompanied by William Kekwick as second-in-command, together with 10 other men.
