Polo was first played in Adelaide on Montefiore Hill in 1876 with the Adelaide Polo Club forming in 1879 and playing matches at Victoria Park Racecourse. In 1902 it moved to new grounds on the corner of what is now Morphett Road and Anzac Highway, where it stayed until 1960. The grounds are now the home of the West Torrens/Birkalla Soccer Club and the Polo Club is based at Mount Barker.
In 1947 the Mount Crawford team defeated Adelaide to win the coveted Barr Smith Cup.
Hoofs and Horns was produced by the famous bootmaker and businessman RM Williams and first published in 1944. Until 1987 it was published in Adelaide when it moved interstate. It is well known nationally as an iconic magazine among the horse riding community. The magazine was recently relaunched as a town and country lifestyle magazine under the RM Williams Outback label.
