Eadweard Muybridge 1830-1904 was a British photographer who was a pioneer in the photographic study of motion.
In 1872 he proved for the first time that all four feet of a horse were off the ground at the same time while trotting. Later in the 1870s, he proved the same when the horse was galloping. His 'single shot photography of motion led to his most pioneering body of work, known as motion sequence photography. Here, separate instantaneous images of motion were displayed in a grid illustrating consecutive phases of movement.' - from Kingston University website
