Charles Lesueur was the artist on the Baudin Australian Expedition in 1801. His best-known work depicts the Australian wildlife such as the Emu. Less known are his incredibly beautiful depictions of ocean life.

The work of the Baudin expedition brought to the attention of the French public the wonders of the southern hemisphere, and inspired many later works including that of Baron Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) one of the most influential scientific figures of the nineteenth century.
