'Billjim' was a term used to describe the typical Australian soldier of the First World War and was derived from two of the most popular male names used in Australia, Bill and Jim. When service personnel began to return home to Australia, many found that their previous jobs were no longer available. A committment was made by the state governments to repatriate and compensate the returned servicemen through the creation of soldier settlement schemes and the employment of returned soldiers in the public service.
