Song of the 10th Battalion

Embarking in October 1914 the 10th Battalion was one of the first two AIF units to land at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
The 10th Battalion was also involved in the fighting on the Western Front at Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Ypres, and the great Allied offensive in France at Amiens in 1918.

Stanley Price Weir, born in Norwood in 1866, was appointed as a Lieutenant Colonel and given comand of the 10th Battalion. For Weir's 'gallantry and his consistent skill, tact and judgement in command' he won the Distinguished Service Order. He he retired from the A.M.F. in March 1921 as an honorary brigadier general.

Hooper Brewster-Jones
A schoolmaster’s son born at Black Rock in 1887, Hooper Brewster-Jones came to Adelaide at just 13 years of age to study piano at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. In 1906 he won the Elder Scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where he studied composition, chamber music and piano. Returning to SA in 1909 to perform and teach, he married German lieder specialist Gerta Homburg the following year. He formed the Brewster-Jones Symphony Orchestra, South Australia's only symphony orchestra working during WWI, which by 1920 numbered seventy players.
He worked with the ABC as a pianist and a lecturer on radio, and was music critic for the Advertiser. Although retired, on 8 July 1949 he performed Mozart’s Piano concerto No 20 in D Minor with his son’s string orchestra. It was a fine performance, but fifteen minutes later he died from a heart attack. 
Hooper Brewster-Jones, South Australia’s most significant musical influence of his era, is grandfather of Rick and John Brewster of The Angels.

Claude Richard Beresford was born 9 March1888 to Sydney Julia (nee Acraman ) and Richard de la Poer Beresford at North Adelaide. At the start of the Great War he wrote the words for the composition by H. Brewster-Jones titled Song of the Tenth Battalion, patriotically published by Mail Newspapers Ltd. as a fundraiser.  Also known as See Bee or CeeBee, Beresford wrote two fundraising books of verse. Verses Afloat published by The Mail for Navy Day 1918 preceded They’re coming home and other verses published by the YMCA for their 1919 Red Triangle Appeal. Many of those poems were previously published in The Mail or the RSA Magazine. Married to Marion Beaven, he was the Melbourne Steamship Co. Wharf Manager at Port Adelaide until 1923. Becoming a journalist for Adelaide’s News as their shipping specialist he remained there until his death 19. September 1945 at the close of World War Two, in which his son served in the Navy and both his sons-in-law were prisoners of war.
