Diary of James Gilbert McDougall [transcript]

Extract from the diary of James Gilbert McDougall who recorded his observations of the flora and fauna around Yorke Peninsula when he was living in Edithburgh (articled to Mr E Gower).

James Gilbert McDougall was an inveterate collector, sending many specimens to the South Australian Museum, where they are still held. They included several new species, such as a Rock Hermit Crab (Cancellus typus).

Library Volunteer Kerry Durrant has researched James McDougall through Trove and found articles mainly in the South Australian Register referring to him, as well as references to him in Archibald James Campbell's publication Nests and eggs of Australian birds, including the geographical distribution of the species and popular observations thereon: with map, 28 coloured plates and 131 photographic illustrations [S.l.] : Printed for the author by Pawson & Brailsford, Shellfield, 1900. Also includes a list of the specimens that James McDougall is recorded as having donated to the South Australian Museum.
