The Sir Ross Smith aeroplane race game

Board game which commemorates the 1919 air race from England to Australia won by Ross and Keith Smith. Players move around a board which is a map featuring the countries in the route of the flight, but includes diversions to Peking (Beijing) in China, Aden, and Madagascar, and returns to England to complete the game.One of the boyhood games of Thomas Venables Holland (1921-2006), who grew up in Adelaide between the World Wars. As a boy and young person Thomas was a scholar at Prince Alfred College, a chorister, musician, Sunday School teacher and cadet. As an adult he became an Airman during World War II, following that again a scholar, husband, a diplomat for over 30 years, philanthropist, humanist and family man. These pieces came to the State Library following a collaboration between knowledgeable and attentive people resulting in the exhibiting of this rare collection and the story of this 'uncommon' man.
