Inside of the cottage at Baldo

Inside of the cottage at Baldo. Elder 'Art of William Light' says that Light was in Sardinia in 1829 and after leaving La Maddalena 31 October, subsequently rode inland on horseback, going as far as Baldo. Original sketch at least probably dates from this time; the watercolour probably somewaht later. Dutton confirms these dates.

Many of William Light's personal papers and sketchbooks were destroyed in a fire at his cottage in Adelaide in January 1839. Fortunately, some were saved and give us an insight into his decisions for the planning of Adelaide and also his character. Many of the surviving sketches bear the signs of the fire with charred edges.
