CreatorDeane, RachelTitle Diary of Rachel DeaneDate1838Description
Original shipboard diary kept by Rachel Deane while passenger on the 'Winchester' (1838), together with transcripts prepared by Rosalie Sharpe (1990) and Audrey Maschmedt (2009). The account of the voyage out was intended to be sent back to relatives in England, but the writer changed her mind and it remained in South Australia with her family.
History/biography
George Deane, second wife Rachel and three daughters Ellen Maria, Margaret and Mary left Gravesend in June 1838 and arrived in South Australia on 23 September that year as Intermediate passengers in the 'Winchester'. Rachel was a Quaker, related to John Barton Hack, with whom they first lived on arrival. George Deane went into business as an accountant in Hindley Street. In 1840 the Deanes purchased land in the Meadows Special Survey but three years later had to sell it at a loss, due to bad times in the colony. After seven years the Deanes returned to England; later they returned to South Australia. George died at Glen Osmond in 1857.
