Letter from William Hancox

English broadsheet newspaper 'Cheltenham Journal and Stroud Herald' issue for Monday 10 May 1841 with letter published dated 23 August 1840 from an emigrant in South Australia with initials 'W-. H-.'. The letter details his voyage out in 1839, his impressions of the colony of South Australia, living conditions and commodity prices, wages paid for work, and his own employment prospects. The writer's identity is believed to be William Hancox who travelled out on the'Cleveland'. A typescript of the letter with explanatory details of the writer and his life in South Australia is included.

W.H.' is believed to be William Hancox a maltster and gardener from Stratford-on Avon, who applied for free passage to S.A. on 10 April 1839 aged 28. He emigrated on ship 'Cleveland' which arrived 18 December 1839. He first worked in the Adelaide Hills near Mount Lofty; married Jane Pollard 21 December 1840. Became licensee of 'Norfolk Arms' Hotel, Crafers in 1841 and later was associated with other hotels in Salisbury, Adelaide and Edwardstown.
