Diary kept by Samuel Pickering, emigrant labourer of Stalybridge, Lancashire, on a voyage from Plymouth to Adelaide aboard the 'Matilda Atheling', 8 November 1864 to 23 February 1865. Transcribed from the 'Ashton and Stalybridge Reporter' of 14, 21 and 28 October 1865.

Samuel Pickering, labourer, aged forty three, emigrated to South Australia with his wife Mary, also forty three, at a time when the American Civil War had adversely affected the cotton spinning industry in his home town and county.
