Letter from Thomas William Craddock

Letter from Thomas William Craddock of Tarlee, South Australia, to Mr A. Simmons of the Kent Labourers' Union, dated 18 September 1874 and published in the Labourer's Herald in Maidstone, Kent on 11 December 1874. He describes his voyage out on the 'Forfarshire' and working conditions in South Australia around Tarlee where he was living.

Thomas William Craddock born England ca.1851 and wife Louisa Emily (nee Sandford) emigrated to South Australia on the 'Forfarshire' in November 1873. He obtained work about 40 miles from Adelaide within a week of arriving in February 1874, staying there for six months before moving 16 or 17 miles north (Tarlee district). The Craddocks had 11 children born between 1874 and 1898. The family later lived at Freeling before moving north to Port Augusta. T.W. Craddock was associated with the Headcorn Branch of the Federal Union of Agricultural and General Labourers in Kent, England, before he emigrated.
