Diary of voyage on the 'Duke of Cornwall' by A.H. Forder

Typescript copy of a diary kept by Augustus Highmoor Forder of his voyage to South Australia from England on board the ship 'Duke of Cornwall', 5 January - 22 May 1852. (The vessel was quarantined on arrival for smallpox.) The diary ends with some brief news about the Victorian gold diggings and the situation of the Port Phillip settlement, said to be in a state of anarchy.

Augustus Highmoor Forder was born in 1830 at Newington in Surrey. He came to South Australia on the ship 'Duke of Cornwall' in 1852. In 1855 at Kooringa he married his first wife Asenath Jane Mayne who died in 1864. He married secondly Elizabeth Rutter Daniel in 1864. He joined the M.& L. Courts Department in 1860 and was Clerk of the Redruth Court, retiring in 1899. He was also Returning Officer for the District of Burra, Representing Officer to the Destitute Board and Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages in the Kooringa district. He died in 1917 at Laura, SA.
