Lucas, probably written by her daughter Doris Lucas prior to 1939.History/biographyWilliam Arthur Lucas was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs D. Lucas of Bridge House, Trowbridge, in Wiltshire, England, where he was born on 16 January 1853. In October 1876 he arrived in South Australia on the 'Orient' with his sister, brother-in-law J.W. Wilkins and their 3 children. He joined the staff of the 'Advertiser' on arrival and was married to Mary Annette, eldest daughter of Osmond Horne Gilles and his wife Margaret Horne in 1880; his wife, born on 20 May 1853 in Hobart, was a grand-daughter of Lewis W. Gilles and great-niece of Osmond Gilles of Adelaide. W.A. Lucas was one of the printers and compositors of the 50 year celebration edition of the 'Advertiser' in 1908. He and his wife lived at 15 Westall Street, Hyde Park. W.A. Lucas died at Fullarton on 16 July 1939 aged 86; his wife had died on Christmas Day 1938.
