The letter was apparently written some time after leaving the family, as he notes a letter to 'brother William was returned with the news that he had gone to America 12 or 14 years ago'. He tells of going to the gold-diggings and doing well enough to buy 'a piece of ground a pair of bullocks, cow and calf, and set down here farming'. He requests that any of his siblings receiving the letter reply immediately; he also encourages them to follow him out to Australia. Dated 23 February 1854.
