John Whyte was its commander. The diary is written with entries for each day for longitude/latitude, temperature, weather and 'Remarks'. On 19 April the 'Olympus' arrived at Port Nicholson. The manuscript has been folded and may have been sent on to someone after his arrival in New Zealand.History/biographyCharles George Doughty was born at Brockdish in Norfolk in 1816. In 1840 he left England for New Zealand and arrived later in South Australia from Victoria. He was a pastoralist and stock & station agent living at Mount Gambier and Penola. In 1856 he married Bertha Fredericka Louise Mueller from Rostock in Germany who arrived in SA in 1847 on the 'Hermann von Beckerath'. She died after the death of their second child Clara Bertha in 1861. Doughty died on 26 March 1890 in Adelaide and was buried at the North Road Cemetery [details from BISA, 1986]. The donor was a Miss Doughty in 1926, possibly the daughter Clara (1861-1941).
