Letter from Thomas Stow

Draft letter to an unidentified recipient in Toronto, Canada, detailing conditions in the colony of South Australia under the headings of scenery and aspect, climate, land, water, stock, commerce, trade and money, prospects, religion, and comparison with other colonies. Stow's comments are candid but generally present an optimistic view of the colony and its prospects. Written 27 April 1842 from Adelaide.

Thomas Quinton Stow was born in Hadley, Suffolk. He studied at the Missionary College, Gosport, before taking posts at a number of Congregational Churches. In 1836 Stow accepted a posting with the Colonial Missionary Society to South Australia, arriving in Adelaide with his wife Elizabeth and four sons in 1837 on the 'Hartley'. Active in both church and education, he was a highly respected member of the community. He died 19 July 1862.
