Diary of John Le Sauvage

Diary of John Thomas Martin Le Sauvage, prospector, 8 August-31 December 1888. His search for gold and minerals covered the Alice Springs region and northwards. Diary sketches include maps of his exploration routes and views of various places including Chambers Pillar and Ruby Gap. A typescript transcript of the diary is included.

John Thomas Martin Le Sauvage was born Guernsey, Channel Islands, 1844, son of Martin and Martha Le Sauvage. Family came to S.A. in 1854 on 'Navarino'. He prospected for gold and mineral in the area north of Alice Springs; believed also to have been a coachdriver. His employment may have been with Charles Chewings, explorer and geologist, as his diary mentions Chewings & Co, which had connections with Hergott Springs (later Marree). In 1889 S.A. Directory John le Sauvage is listed as prospector, Abbott Street, North Adelaide. His date and place of death are unknown.
