Because of their nightly presence in our homes, and their role in keeping us informed, television news presenters have become some of our best known and most respected media personalities.
John Doherty was Adelaide's first television newsreader. Originally hired by NWS 9 as a floor manager, Doherty was found to be in possession of a good camera presence and the appropriate level of authority to deliver their nightly 15 minute news bulletin. A duty her performed in-between his behind the scenes work on shows The Channel niners and Adelaide tonight.
Two newsreader well known to contemporary audiences are Rob Kelvin (pictured) and Jane Doyle.
Kelvin joined NSW 9 in 1979 after starting his career on Adelaide radio. He became one of the station's newsreaders in 1983, teamed with Caroline Ainslie, and in 1987 started a twenty year on-air partnership with television veteran Kevin Crease, a pairing that ended in 2007 with the death of Crease. Kelvin retired from delivering the nightly news in 2010.
Doyle started her media career in the early 1980s working in regional newspapers and then on local ABC radio. She spent two years with ABC television in Adelaide before moving to Channel 7 in 1989 where she continues to present the nightly news.
