Over 400 women served in the Corps: women of all ages and from a wide range of social and employment backgrounds joined. All had their driving skills tested by the Secretary of the National Safety Council, Mr Howard, before being assigned to their units. They were trained to work as mechanics and to drive transport vehicles that would carry soldiers, war workers and goods around the home front.
