Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force.
The WAAAF was formed in March 1941 after intensive lobbying and in response to a shortage of wireless telegraphists. After Japan joined the war in December 1941 the service was widened and included skilled technical work on aircraft as well as other mechanical and electrical duties, and work in medical, meteorological, signals and radar areas. Numbers of women serving peaked in October 1944 at over 18,000.
