The Voluntary Aid Detachment was initially organised by the Australian Red Cross during World War I. In 1928 the Australian Army Medical Corps assumed responsibility. The VADs provided first aid, nursing assistance, comforts, domestic assistance and other supports for returned and wounded soldiers.
