Tour down under : International cycle race : [poster]

Australia is one of the strongest cycling nations in the world, and with the support of the South Australian Government and the expertise of Olympic cycling champion Mike Turtur, South Australia hosted the first Tour Down Under road cycling race in 1999. Now in its eleventh year, the 2008 Tour Down Under made history by becoming the first Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Pro Tour cycling event to be held outside of Europe, and it is now the first UCI ProTour race of the season.

The event's status was enhanced in 2009 with the return to racing of cycling legend and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and his Astana team. The 2009 Tour Down Under was the biggest event ever staged in South Australia in terms of visitor numbers, economic impact and media coverage.

The Tour Down Under is a six day event, with the stages of the race held in different regions of the metropolitan area, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Barossa Valley, as well as an Adelaide street circuit, with the leader wearing the coveted ochre jersey.
