South Australia celebrated the 150th anniversary of European settlement in 1986 with a year of activities. The year of celebration was officially launched on New Year's Eve 1985, and concluded on Proclamation Day, 28 December 1986. Proclamation Day is South Australia's official birthday and commemorates the proclamation of the province of South Australia by Governor John Hindmarsh at Glenelg in 1836.

There were numerous ways in which the state's 150th birthday was celebrated including the publication of a variety of books on many aspects of South Australian history, including town histories, and the establishment of permanent displays of the state's history such as the South Australian Maritime Museum and the North Terrace commemorative walk of bronze plaques.

The logo was a stylised Piping Shrike, the state's emblem. Designed by Lyndon Whaite, it incorporated two of the State's three colours red and gold, together with the bird's own black and white colours.
