Part of the text accompanying the illustration reads ‘The City, as viewed from the fertile district of the Reed Beds, appears to stand on an elevated plateau, overlooking the level country towards the Gulf of St Vincent, with the Mount Lofty Ranges in the distance forming a delightful background, the ever varying colours of which, from the grey wreaths of mist which clothe their sides during the mornings of the rainy season, to the glowing amethyst and rose tints which they frequently assume, while the sun is setting over the Gulf, after a day of cloudless heat, afford endless pictures, of which the eye never grows weary.’

This is one of 60 coloured lithographs found in the 1847 edition of 'South Australia Illustrated' by colonial artist George French Angas, together with a descriptive passage for each. The lithograph was created by J.W. Giles from Angas' original painting. The date assigned is assumed to be approximately when the lithographs were created; the original paintings were done in earlier years.
