Formed in Adelaide in early 1965 as the Mustangs, the Masters Apprentices became one of Australia's most popular groups. The original members were Mick Bower (guitar), Jim Keays (vocals), Rick Morrison (guitar), Gavin Webb (bass) and Brian Vaughton (drums). Their first single Undecided/War or hands of time was recorded in Max Peppers's Adelaide studio and released on Astor Records in October 1966.

The Masters Apprentices released a succession of hits during their seven-year career, and were considered as one of Australia's best live and recording acts. They tried repeatedly to break into the British and international market but were ultimately unsuccessful. The band regularly packed out gigs across Adelaide, as well as making mini-tours to outlying towns and cities like Murray Bridge, Mt Gambier and Whyalla.

The YMCA and YWCA hosted discos and dances and other functions for young people as a regular event, providing opportunities for them to get together, to meet, exchange ideas and enjoy the new popular culture. The dances at the Y-Y club were held on Monday nights and were always very well attended, in part because there was no other entertainment for the under-21s in Whyalla at this time.

Viscount Sir William Slim was Governor General of Australia from 1953 to 1960.
