Emily Wilson was a talented South Australian artist whose detailed paintings captured the beauty of selected Australian wildflowers. Around 1895 she studied china painting with Rosa Fiveash, in addition to painting in watercolours. For her flower paintings she used the 'papier nature' light grey paper, fashionable at the time. Her study of Epacris which was exhibited at the South Australian Society of Arts in 1904 and awarded a prize. Her hand-painted doyleys were sought after by Lady Tennyson, the South Australian Governor's wife. Six fringed silk doilies painted by Emily Wilson with Australian wildflowers, some signed 'E.W.' are held in the collection. One of these designs has a preliminary study painted on a card.
