Symmetrical smile

Lidia Groblicka was born in Poland in 1933 and spent her childhood in a war torn country where the family later became refugees. After the war she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kracow in 1951-57, where she was taught woodblock printing by Ludwick Gardowski, and also studied Polish folk art. She lived in London from 1958 until migrating to Australia with her family in 1965. In Adelaide she met the Polish born artist Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz and became a member of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts where her work found a wider audience, and was included in the 1997 National Travelling Print Exhibition.

Groblicka lives and works in Adelaide, producing both paintings and relief prints. Her work combines observations of Australian life and memories of her Polish homeland. While carefully crafted, Groblicka's prints appear naive in the style of a humble folk artist, with simple often symmetrical forms, and patterns resembling the embroidery and tapestry that she is also interested in. Animals, insects, flowers and trees are recurring motifs in Groblicka's prints and reflect her love of the natural world and field trips into the forest with her natural history curator father.
