An unusual piece, perhaps better described as an acrylic sculpture, features four panels organised into an interlocking puzzle and adhered to a black background panel. Each panel relates to the other in its decoration. Swirling colours of green and pink create a marbled effect. The artist has used fine application of colour as close inspection reveals minute details in the marbling. It is possible the four panels were part of a larger painting or experimental work that was cut down. The artist may have used a technique which incorporates blowing air through a straw to move colour across the picture plane

Latvian born Erna Dzidra Knochs studied arts and crafts, education and art history at Flinders University and the South Australian school of Art between 1970 and 1980. She has exhibited her visual artwork in all Australian capital cities.

Knochs' art practice includes mosaic ceramics, cold worked glass, graphic design publications, jewellery and object design and production, general and documentary work with photography, printmaking in lithography, screen printing and zinc/copper plate etching, and wood sculpture and textile and fabric weaving. Her professional activities include community arts projects, curating and project/event coordination.

Knochs organised a number of art exhibitions for the Australian Bicentennial celebrations of 1988 for which she was awarded a commemmorative silver medal under the Women Celebrate 88 program. Forgotten Immigrants and Australians , held in Old Parliament House, Adelaide in October 1988, showcased photographic images of immigrants from the the late 1940s. A craft exhibition - Northern European Immigrants, held at the Migration and Settlement Museum, featured traditional and contemporary craftwork by Estonian, Latvian, Polish and Ukranian immigrants.
