Cricket sketches

Both Victor Richardson and Clarrie Grimmett played cricket for South Australia and Australia in the 1920s and 30s.

Victor Richardson (1894-1969) was a top batsman and fielder. He was Vice-Captain of the Australian team during the infamous bodyline series and captained the squad during the 1934/35 tour of South Africa. He also played league football for Sturt and captained the South Australian state team in 1923 and 1924.

Clarence (Clarrie) Grimmett (1891-1980), a New Zealander by birth, was a versatile spin bowler, and is credited with developing the 'flipper'. He was the first bowler from any country to take 200 Test wickets and by the end of his Australian representative career he had played 37 Tests, taking a record 216 wickets at an average of 24 runs.

Both players were involved in the defining moment of the 'Bodyline' series, the third test match of the 1932-33 Ashes series played at Adelaide Oval. Clarrie Grimmett took 2 wickets for 94 runs in England's first innings and 1 for 74 in their second. Victor Richardson made 28 runs in Australia's first innings and 21 runs in the second.

England won the match by 338 runs.
