In the days before pubs stayed open past 6 pm, dances were held throughout Adelaide and in country towns. In the early 1960s the Teensville Casual Club, the Oxford Club and the Princeton Club (Thursdays at the Greek Community Hall in Franklin Street and Saturdays at the Burnside Town Hall) were among the 100 or so dances being held around Adelaide. In December 1963 Young Modern featured an advertisement for the Gigantic Surfie Stomp night held by the Miami Club at the Port Noarlunga Skating Rink. You could do the Stomp, the Twist, the Mashed Potato, the Fly and many other dances. Soft drinks kept thirst at bay.
In the mid-sixties the Beat Basement in Rundle Street became one of the 'in' places.
Regional centres also had their own clubs such as the Pied Piper Discotheque at 100 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier, and the Y-Y Club in Whyalla.
