History/biography
Thomas Hardy was a surgeon of Walworth, Surrey, and his wife was Harriet, nee Hurst. In 1836 Hardy inherited the Yorkshire manors of Birksgate and Shepley; he and his wife did not come out to South Australia. Their sons Alfred (1813-1870) and Arthur (1817-1909) both came to SA, the first in 1836 on the Cygnet as a member of Light's survey party, and Arthur on the Platina in 1838. The land grant document was donated to the Library in 1952 by a descendant of Alfred Hardy.
