7.65 mm automatic pistol of Webley & Scott Ltd. manufacture.

This pistol was issued to Ross Smith in World War One, and he carried it during the Great Air Race in 1919. Webley & Scott Ltd are famous British gunsmiths, producing handguns from 1834 to 1979. Production of this pistol began in 1909, and it was often used as a pocket, boot or concealment pistol. It was issued on a limited basis to Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Air Corps during WW1. After the war the British military returned to the more usual revolvers, and these military Webley & Scott self-loading pistols were declared obsolete. Ross also carried a Very light pistol during the Race, and a Colt .38 which is displayed at the Keswick Army Barracks Museum.
