The 2002 Adelaide Fringe was held from 22 February-17 March and co-ordinated by Director Katrina Sedgewick.
With a program of more than 400 shows, exhibitions and events, the 2002 Fringe was the biggest, but also the best Fringe to date.
Advertiser arts columnist Tim Lloyd went so far as to write: This Fringe will be remembered as the year that the Fringe outgrew the Festival. In fact this will be remembered as the year the Festival was changed by the Fringe. 18 March 2002.
Fringe performances expanded into the suburbs and regions, with activities in the Barossa Valley, Hahndorf, Port Noarlunga, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Pirie, Mount Gambier and Renmark.
The inaugural Visitor and Economic Impact Survey reported the Fringe's economic impact to the state as being between $15.6 million to $33.1 million.
