Pop-up pop music!

The album Once upon a twilight, a recording of iconic psychedelic pop, boasts one of the most unusual and extravagant covers ever - the band as pop-up characters!

Known as a gatefold cover, this was a form of packaging for LP records which became popular in the 1960s. When the cover is folded, it becomes the same size as a standard LP cover, but can be folded out to stand up. This unique record album cover art set new standards for Australian music album packaging with the inclusion of die-cut pop-up figures of the band members. The music was also ground-breaking using processed production techniques on the vocals, exotic instruments and instrumentation, reverse tape effects and the coveted Marshall amplifiers.

No doubt the cover was pored over by many a teenager.

The Twilights were one of the most popular groups in Australia during the 1960s. Members had undergone their musical 'apprenticeships' in groups such as the Checkmates, and the Hurricanes, playing shows at venues such as the Oxford Club and the Mogambo Club. Members included vocalist Glenn Shorrock, guitarist Terry Britten, Paddy McCartney vocals,
bassist John Bywaters, Peter Brideoake guitar. Original drummer Frank Barnard played on the band's first five singles but left the group to remain in Adelaide. He was replaced by Laurie Pryor who had played with John E Broome and the Handels.

The Twilights released 15 singles (including a giveaway Bowling brings out the swinger in you), three EPs, two full albums and a 'Best of...' between June 1965 to December 1968.

Glenn Shorrock continued his successful career as a performer and songwriter with Axiom, Mississippi and most notably, the Little River Band. Terry Britten has a had a very successful career as a songwriter, writing hits for Cliff Richard and Tina Turner, and will of course be remembered for his Twilights hits 9:50 and Cathy come home. John Bywaters plays in Twilight Zone with former member of the Masters Apprentices, Peter Tilbrook.
