Adelaide United Football Club is an integral and successful part of the sporting life of South Australia. It was formed in 2003 replacing Adelaide City in the now defunct National Soccer League, and this 'clapper' was produced in 2003. The Hyundai A-League was launched in 2005 by Football Federation Australia with eight participating clubs located in Adelaide (South Australia), Brisbane (Queensland), Central Coast (New South Wales), Melbourne (Victoria), Newcastle (New South Wales), Perth (Western Australia) Sydney (New South Wales) and Auckland (New Zealand).
Adelaide won the inaugural Premiership by leading the competition 11 points clear with 3 games to play. Unfortunately Adelaide fell short of adding the Championship trophy. Adelaide has been runner-up twice in the A-League, and in the 2008 season advanced to the final of the Asian Football Confederation's Champions League, losing to Japanese club Gamba Osaka.
