Postcard sent to Private John Jones in Cassel Prisoner of War camp 'from the land of golden wattle', 'to let you know you are not forgotten.
In the First World War, it is estimated that over 4000 Australians were taken prisoner, mostly in Sinai, Palestine, Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Their experiences varied greatly, depending on their captors (Turks or Germans) and where they were interned.
John Jones of Port Pirie joined the A.I.F. 48th Battalion as a Private aged thirty three on 27 July 1916. He was reported' missing in April 1917 and as a Prisoner of War at Gef Minden the following month, shortly afterwards being transferred to Cassel Prisoner of War Camp. Following his repatriation to England he married Rose Beatrice Wright on 9 August 1919. The couple sailed to Australia and settled in Port Pirie where John Jones worked as an accountant or bookkeeper at Port Pirie Smelters and Rose as a nursing sister. John Jones died c.1962 and Rose Jones on 18 January 1988. The only child of their marriage, Stuart John, died in infancy and Rose Jones left her estate to the Crippled Childrens Association which passed on the papers comprising PRG 883 to the State Library of South Australia in 1989.
