World War One Badges

A collection of World War One badges marking events, anniversaries, organizations, and appeals to raise monies for various causes during the period. Wounded and returned soldiers and their families benefited from some of these appeals.

The Gallipoli landing, Anzac Day, Armistice, Wattle Day and Violet Day are represented. Violet Day was founded as a day of remembrance for Australian soldiers killed in Gallipoli and Egypt. Small posies of "the humble, but beautiful" violet were sold by the Cheer-Up Society to raise funds for the establishment of a permanent club for returned soldiers.

Souvenir badges for organizations such as the Australian Red Cross, Australian Comforts Fund and Cheer-up Society are included in this collection. Several of the badges are local in origin - from Port Elliott, Henley and Grange, and Hindmarsh.
