Strenuous work: the campaign for Women's Suffrage in South Australia. Episode 1

On the 18th of December 1894 the South Australian Parliament passed the Constitutional Amendment (Adult Suffrage) Act giving women the right to vote, and also to stand for parliament. Queen Victoria signed the legislation on 21 March 1895

This meant that South Australia was the first place in the world to give equal political rights to both women and men.

This podcast is the first of a three part series that looks at the campaign leading up to the successful vote. It includes excerpts from speeches, newspaper articles and letters to the editor.

Following episodes will feature stories about those that made it happen and those that stood in its way.
