Magic lanterns were developed in the 17th century and by the 19th century had become a popular toy with both parents and children. Slides were produced using a wide variety of themes. For families, fun and entertainment were the main themes with stories and rhymes illustrated. Magic lanterns were also used in church, Sunday School and in missionary activities illustrating the Life of Christ or Biblical stories.
These early toy lanterns were lit with lamps or candles, although this progressed in the early 20th century to lanterns that were illuminated using gas light, acetylene lamps, methylated spirit burners and even electricity. Magic lantern shows were also travelling shows; these however used larger models than these toy versions.
